skin (by an autocrine mechanism).
DHEA is the precursor of
androstenedione, which can
undergo further conversion to
produce the androgen testosterone
and the estrogens estrone and
estradiol. DHEA can also be
synthesized from precursors in
the Mexican yam, which is the
most commonly available.
Considerable interest in DHEA has
been developed in recent years
with reports that it may play a
role in the aging process.
